Waihohonu Hut on the Tongariro Northern Circuit is one of the largest and best-equipped backcountry huts in the country, set in a tussock valley between Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. Mangatepopo Hut sits at the foot of Ngauruhoe near the start of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. On the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk, Panekire Hut is perched on the Panekire Bluff with sweeping views over the lake and Te Urewera.
