New Zealand has over 950 DOC huts spread across both islands — from remote Fiordland fiords to the volcanic plateau of the Central North Island. Hut Finder tracks live availability for the 160+ of these that are bookable directly through the DOC website.
Each region in New Zealand offers a distinct tramping character. The South Island's western regions — Fiordland and the West Coast — are defined by heavy rainfall, ancient forest, and dramatic relief. Canterbury and Otago offer drier, more alpine terrain above the Southern Alps snowline. The north of the South Island (Nelson/Tasman and Marlborough) gets the most sunshine and combines coastal and mountain experiences in close proximity.
On the North Island, the Central region is dominated by active volcanoes and the beech ridges of the Tararua and Ruahine ranges. The Bay of Plenty and Coromandel offer accessible overnight trips within a few hours of Auckland. At the southern tip, Stewart Island provides the most remote Great Walk experience in the country.

The Department of Conservation divides New Zealand into management regions that broadly align with the country's natural geography. Hut Finder uses these same regions so availability data maps directly to DOC's booking system.
Not all DOC huts require bookings — many backcountry huts operate on a first-come, first-served basis with a hut pass. Hut Finder only tracks huts that require advance online booking through the DOC website.
Availability data is refreshed every 2 hours. Always confirm your booking on the official DOC website before travelling, as last-minute changes can occur.
